Different forms of Marathi sangeet (Part I)

Aarti
  This is a short prayer sung in the honor and respect of a deity or a Guru.
  Usually directly addressed to them and accompanied by a "diva (diya)".
  Example : "Sukha karta dukha harta varta vighnachi..." (For Lord Ganesh)

Abhang
  It is originated from Maharashtra's "Santa Parampara" of the archaic period.
  It is sung to praise the god. A narration to the people about a particular god.
  Example : "Vruksha valli amha soyare vanachari..."

Angai Geet
  A lullaby sung in Marathi language.
  Example :"Nimbonichya jhada mage chandra jhopala ga bayee...."

Baal geet
  Nursery Rhymes or songs for small children
  Example :"Sasa to kasa ki kapus jasa...."

Bhajan
  A Bhajan is a type of Hindu devotional song,.
  It is often simple, lyrical and expressing love for the Divine.
  Example : 1) "Keshava madhava..."
                     2) "Dehachi tijori..."

Bhakti geet
  Songs sung with devotion.
  Example :"Itni Shakti Hamein Dena Data..."

Bharud
  Folk music form.It consists of songs and dance, with a social message.
  It is a kind of farcical, ironical form of presenting the faults of ordinary human beings.
  Example : "Vinchu chawala kay me karu...."

Bhav geet
  Songs with depth of meaning.
  Example : "Ek dhaga sukhacha..."

Bhupali
  Early morning prayer sung with the sun rise.
  Example : "Prabhatee sur mani rangati dash disha bhupali gatee..."

Chitrapat geet
  Film Songs.
  Example : "Kombadi palali tangadi dharun..."

Deshabhakti geet
  Patriotic songs.
  Example :"Shur amhi saradar amhala kay kunachi bhiti..."

Gan 
  It is a prayer to Lord Ganpati. 
  Example : "Sanayee cha sur..." 

Gavalan / Gaulan 
  It is a traditional song, sung by gopika for Bhagwan Krishna. 
  Example : "Dahyaa dudhaachi karto chori, Nandaacha hari..." 

Gondhal 
  Folk music form. 
  Example : 1) "Aai bhavani tujhya krupene tarashi bhaktala..." 
                     2) "Aadi maya amba bai...." 

Jogawa 
  It is a request to the mysterious power within to rise  
  so that we may become one with the cosmic consciousness. 
  Example : "Anadi nirgun prakatali bhavani..."

Lok geet  
  Also called Folk songs.  
  The element of profound sentiments, passion and play of words forms a Lok Geet. 
  Example : "Waghya murali bhandara udhalit..." 

Natya sangeet  
  Songs sung in drama. 
  Example : Songs from "Vada jau kunala sharan ga..." 

Owi / Owee 
  Part of poem, songs. 
  It is very common to find women in rural areas singing Owee,  
  while they grinding grains on a domestic flour mill (In Marathi it is called 'Jaate'). 
  Example : "Are Sansar Sansar, jasa tawa chulyawar..." 

Powada 
  Folk music form. 
  They combine entertainment with preferment. 
  Example : "Dhanya Sant Eknaath Yancha Powada..." 

Shaurya geet  
  Songs sung to describe boldness, firmness, determination. 
  Example : "Myanatun usale talawarichi pat...." 

Stuti geet 
  It is composed of powerful sonnet in praise of somebody(God / Human being). 
  Example : "Deva ho deva ganapati deva..."
